Atomic Fiber is the open-access fiber network Los Alamos County, New Mexico, is building to every home and business in Los Alamos and White Rock, and the County is adding a second fiber route off the hill. When it’s finished, the County says, service can continue on the other route if one is cut. Intellipop runs your service on it, with 24/7 support. When something breaks, you call. A person picks up. Atomic Fiber is open access: the County owns the fiber, and we run your internet service over it. To do that, we pay the network a wholesale fee. The network sets that fee, which helps pay for building and running the fiber network.
Here's our promise: your plan price stays the same as long as our wholesale fee stays the same. If the network ever raises it, we tell you before your bill changes, and your price goes up by no more than that increase.
What keeps you connected.
New glass, County-owned.
Atomic Fiber is brand-new fiber that Los Alamos County owns. Glass carries light, not electricity, so electrical noise can't disturb the signal.
A second way off the hill is coming.
The County is adding a second fiber route off the hill, into White Rock. When it's finished, the County says, service can continue on the other route if one is cut.

Keep your modem and router on.
They run on your home's power. A small battery backup (a UPS) keeps them on through short power outages, so you stay online as long as the network itself has power.

Atomic Fiber Coverage in Los Alamos and White Rock
Atomic Fiber is being built in phases across Los Alamos and White Rock. The County broke ground in May 2026 and expects the first homes, in White Rock, to be ready in December. Full buildout is expected in 2029 or 2030.

How to get the max speeds in your home.
The Everything plan delivers up to 8 Gbps each way on a wired connection. What you measure at home depends on your own gear, and your router sets your own limit. Four things you control make the biggest difference:
- Your router’s internet port. Most home routers top out at 1 Gbps, so most homes measure about 1 Gbps on a wired connection. To go past that, the router needs a 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps port.
- A cable beats WiFi. WiFi is the biggest speed limit in most homes. Plug the computer, console or TV that needs the speed into the router with an Ethernet cable.
- Your device. A computer with a 1 Gbps network port can only measure 1 Gbps. Multi-gigabit speeds need a multi-gigabit port on the device too.
- Where the router sits. In the open, near the middle of the house, off the floor and away from the microwave.

Why 8 and not 10. The network’s fiber technology is rated 10 gigabits a second on paper. After overhead, about 8 is what is left, so 8 is the number we publish.

In 2025, the County approved bonds to build fiber to every home and business in Los Alamos and White Rock, with uploads as fast as downloads. The project is estimated at $35 million. The County owns the fiber, the way it owns the roads and the water lines.

Frequently Asked Questions
When will service be available at my address?
The County expects the first homes, in White Rock, to be ready in December 2026. The rest of Los Alamos and White Rock follows phase by phase, with full buildout expected in 2029 or 2030. Pre-sign with your address and we'll send you project updates as your timing confirms.
Is Atomic Fiber reliable?
Atomic Fiber is too new to have a track record, so here's what it has going for it. It's new glass fiber that the County owns and expects to last 30 to 50 years, and glass carries light, not electricity, so electrical noise can't disturb the signal. The County is also adding a second fiber route off the hill. When it's finished, the County says, service can continue on the other route if one is cut. Will my internet work in a power outage?
Your fiber modem and router run on your home's power, so they go off when it does. Plug both into a small battery backup (a UPS) and they keep running through short outages, as long as the network itself has power.
Is the Everything plan really unlimited?
It has no data cap. Speed has a ceiling: every bit the network delivers, up to 8 Gbps on a wired connection, and your router sets your own limit. We would rather say that than put an asterisk on it.
Do I need a new router for the Everything plan?
Not to sign up. A typical home router gets about 1 Gbps on a wired connection. To go past that, you need a router with a 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps port and a wired device that can keep up. Our router finder shows which routers keep up, or lease ours with a 10 Gbps port for $14.95 a month, plus local taxes and fees.
What equipment do you provide?
Every install includes a fiber modem, the wall-mounted box where the fiber connection ends. For WiFi, bring your own router or lease ours: $12.95 a month with a 2.5 Gbps port ($17.95 if your home needs mesh units), or $14.95 with a 10 Gbps port ($19.95 with mesh units), plus local taxes and fees.
Do I need to cancel my current internet now?
No. Pre-signing doesn't change your current service. Keep it until your fiber is working, then cancel it.
Is there really no contract?
Right. Month-to-month. No commitment beyond the current month. The price lock is our promise to you, not a commitment from you. You can cancel any time.
How does the County's fiber network work?
Los Alamos County owns the fiber infrastructure, the same way it owns the roads and water lines. Intellipop delivers internet service over it.
What's the difference between Atomic Fiber and Intellipop?
Atomic Fiber is the network, the physical fiber from the street to your house. Intellipop provides your internet service over it. You pay Intellipop for the service.
How does installation work during the build?
When your address opens, we reach out to book a time. The network's technician brings the fiber into your home and works out with you where the wall plate and fiber modem go. Installation is free while the County is building.
Why only two plans?
Because a ladder of speeds makes you guess what you need. The Everything plan is every bit of speed the network delivers, for $69. If you don't need every bit of speed, the Classic plan is 250 Mbps for $49.
Will my price stay the same?
Yes, as long as the wholesale fee we pay the network stays the same. Only two things could raise your plan price: the network raising that fee, or a new tax or government fee. If either happens, we tell you before your bill changes, and your price goes up by no more than that increase. Offers like your first month free are separate and don't change your plan price.
What happened to my pre-sign price?
It went down, and you don't need to do anything. If you pre-signed on 250 Mbps, you now have the Classic plan at $49 a month. If you pre-signed on 1 Gbps or faster, you now have the Everything plan at $69 a month. If your pre-sign came with a 3-year price lock, it still stands, at your new price: for three years from the day your service starts, your plan price stays at $49 or $69 a month.
